Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has strongly condemned the killing of 13 Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the tragic incident.
Reports indicate that the victims were attacked late Monday night by unidentified gunmen who stormed the area in two SUVs during a community meeting. The assailants opened fire indiscriminately, leaving several dead at the scene.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, Governor Nwifuru described the attack as “barbaric and senseless,” expressing deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives.
“This senseless act of violence against law-abiding citizens is not only barbaric but a direct assault on peace, unity, and the sanctity of human life,” the governor said. “It is beyond comprehension that Ebonyi citizens peacefully gathered for a meeting could be targeted and killed at close range. Such an act is entirely unacceptable.”
Governor Nwifuru expressed confidence that the Anambra State Government and security agencies would act swiftly to apprehend those responsible. He warned that any failure to bring the perpetrators to justice could strain relations between the two states.
While awaiting the outcome of the investigation, the governor appealed to the people of Ebonyi—especially the affected families and communities—to remain calm and avoid any retaliatory actions that could further escalate tensions.
“This kind of barbarism has no place in any civilized society. Every available state resource will be deployed to ensure that the masterminds behind this horrific act are identified and prosecuted,” he assured.
Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all Ebonyi citizens, both within and outside the state.
