Trump made the announcement in a post on his official social media account, @realDonaldTrump, on Monday, warning that the new tariffs would take effect on January 1, 2027.

The United States President, Donald Trump, has announced plans to increase tariffs on vehicles, automotive parts and steel imported from Canada to 50 per cent, accusing the country of exploiting the US through what he described as unfair trade practices.

Trump made the announcement in a post on his official social media account, @realDonaldTrump, on Monday, warning that the new tariffs would take effect on January 1, 2027.

According to Trump, the increased tariffs would apply to “all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel,” as part of his administration’s efforts to address what he described as a longstanding trade imbalance between the two countries.

“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump said, accusing Canada of imposing “ridiculously high tariffs on our farmers and farm products.”

He claimed that the tariffs imposed by Canada had made life difficult for American farmers, whom he described as “great American Patriots,” while contributing to what he said was a $60 billion deficit between the United States and Canada. “Not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE!” Trump declared. He said the new tariff regime would be introduced from January 1, 2027, with a major exception for companies manufacturing within the United States.“Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS,” Trump said, signalling that the policy would be aimed at encouraging automobile, automotive parts and steel production within the United States.

“Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS,” Trump said, signalling that the policy would be aimed at encouraging automobile, automotive parts and steel production within the United States. The announcement represents another escalation in Trump’s aggressive trade policy towards Canada, a major trading partner of the United States.Trump also rejected the longstanding treatment of Canada as a close economic partner, declaring: “Canada will be treated like a State no longer!”

Beyond the proposed tariffs, the US president criticised Canada’s broader approach to trade and relations with the United States, describing the country as one of the most difficult nations for Washington to deal with.“On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with,” he said.Trump accused Canada of feeling entitled to preferential treatment from the United States, while insisting that the economic relationship was more beneficial to Canada than to Washington.

“They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!” he said.He further claimed that Canada conducts the overwhelming majority of its business with the United States.“They do 95% of their business with the U.S., with us, the exact opposite!” Trump stated. The proposed 50 per cent tariffs, if implemented as announced, could have significant implications for cross-border trade in automobiles, automotive components and steel, particularly given the integrated nature of the North American manufacturing sector.

On Saturday, SaharaReporters reported that Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States after the Donald Trump administration proposed imposing a 50% tariff on about $28 billion worth of Canadian goods. The Canadian government announced the decision after what it described as last-minute changes to the proposed terms by the United States, saying the new conditions were “unfair, uneconomic” and raised concerns about the reliability of any potential trade agreement. In a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the Canadian government said Prime Minister Mark Carney had directed the country’s trade negotiators to return to Ottawa following months of negotiations with the United States.

“However, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians,” the government said.“As a result, this evening, I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa.”
