The Lagos State Police Command has taken steps to maintain public safety by stopping an unapproved Egungun festival, arresting 24 suspected organizers believed to be planning activities that could disrupt peace in the state.
The unapproved festival plans spread rapidly on social media after a publication attributed to “Oje Parapo of Oregun” outlining plans to enforce a curfew from 10:00 PM till 4:00 AM between the 27th and 28th of November.
The Lagos State Police Command, in a statement by SP Abimbola Adebisi, reiterated its firm stance against lawlessness, announcing the suspension of the festival inorder to maintain public order and safety.
The statement reads, “The Lagos State Police Command has arrested twelve (12) individuals circulating handbills attributed to ‘OJE PARAPO OF OREGUN”, which restricts people’s movement.
“The Command is committed to maintain law and order and will not tolerate lawlessness in any part of the State, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has therefore directed the suspension of this festival, to prevent further disruptions in the State.”
The statement emphasizes , “This restriction is in place to prevent any group from taking laws into their hands, thereby restricting people’s movement .It further warns anyone to desist from planning unauthorised gatherings or activities that could threaten public peace and safety.
“The Police have assessed the impact of the publication of the Oregun traditional Egungun festival, scheduled as seen in the handbills and posters for 27th and 28th November 2025, and deemed it necessary to declare that the event will not proceed, citing concerns over the fear and restrictions, which affects the fundamental human rights and freedom of movement.
“The Command is taking measures to ensure public safety, law and order, and will not permit any festival that could destabilize peace or heighten the tension in the state ,under any circumstances.”
“In similar situation at Mafoluku, Oshodi, within the Makinde Police Division, Twelve(12) suspects were arrested on 23rd November 2025 and are currently under investigation after similar publications were circulated .They will be prosecuted on completion of the investigation,” the statement concluded.
